Welcome to the dog days of summer! Don’t let the heat stop you from having fun! Dance the night away at live concert, or make it a weekend-long affair at one of the many festivals going on. No plans? No problem! Here’s what’s up this week.

First and foremost, this Thursday, August 1st, marks the birthday of the late and great Jerry Garcia.  Consider checking out some of the birthday celebration concerts that aim to celebrate the many graces he bestowed upon this earth.  Some of the Jerry birthday bashes that we would like to recommend are at The 8×10 in Baltimore, MD (08/02), The Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh, NC (08/02) and at Gypsy Sally’s in Washington, DC (08/03).

The Werks are gearing up to celebrate their 10th annual weekend-long celebration of music and arts. That’s right! The Werk Out returns to picturesque Legend Valley in Thornville, OH this weekend.  Gates open up as early as Wednesday the 31st for attendees with early arrival passes.  Music is scheduled to begin Thursday at 2:00 p.m., with The Werks, Big Gigantic, STS9, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Steel Pulse, The Floozies, Twiddle, Dopapod, Turkuaz, and many other great artists all making an appearance.  Try to find some time to wander away from the stage to check out the art gallery, with a premier line-up of visual artists curated by Elise Olmstead of The Jamwich.  A full schedule of workshops and presentations such as ‘Tarot Card Reading,’ ‘Holistic Health,’ ’Juggling,’ ’How to Make Kombucha,’ ‘Wilderness Survival,’ and Charcoal Drawing’ will be running all weekend long to help stimulate the mind and encourage growth!  Grab your weekend general admission pass today for $199 (primitive camping/parking included), before the last-call pricing tier is initiated.  To learn more, view photos and videos from past years, and purchase tickets head on over to http://www.thewerkoutfestival.com/

Pickin’ in Parsons Bluegrass Festival is being held this week, with five full days of live music, at Five River Camp Ground in Parsons, WV.  Get your bluegrass and hillbilly fix from The Gibson Brothers, Russell Moore and IIIrd Tyme Out, Grascals, Sideline, Po’ Ramblin Boys, Jakob Ferry Stragglers, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, and all of the other artists on the seemingly endless list of scheduled performances.  Bring your instrument and make sign up for the Bluegrass Jamming class, taught by Larry Kernagis using the Wernick Method. Feel free to pitch a tent at the campgrounds for $15 a night or book a room at one of the many nearby hotels or motels.  A free shuttle service will be available for both pick up in the morning and drop off in the evenings, and the list of participating locations where the shuttle will be stopping can be found HERE.  Tickets for the entire five-day event are just $95, with 3-day, and single day passes also available for purchase.  To learn more head over to the event’s official page.

The 14th Annual Bear’s Picnic Family Reunion will be held once again at Blain Picnic Ground in Blain, PA.  Gates open this Thursday at 4:00 p.m. Get your groove on with John Kadlecik & The West Philly Fadeaway, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Englishtown Project, Stir Fried, LITZ, lespecial, Flux Capacitor, Root Shock and many other talented musicians that will be on-site throughout the weekend.  Children 15 and under are granted free admissions, if accompanied by an adult, so load up the mini-van and bring the kids as well! Weekend passes, which include parking and car-camping, are currently on sale for $100.  To purchase tickets now, or to answer any questions you may have, check out the Bears Picnic Events official site.

That’s all for this week. Don’t forget to continue scrolling to sneak and peek at the extended list of concerts and festivals for the week. Let us know where you’ll be and feel free to leave your own suggestions in the comment section.  Until next week. Stay jammy.
