What’s up, Readers? We’re back with another special selection of this week’s most jam-covered concerts.  This Thursday marks the Spring Equinox, and that means that spring is official here! What better reason to celebrate? Don’t put away your winter jackets yet, but do start to foster hope that the cold weather will be over shortly. No plans this week? No problem. Here’s what’s up.

Take a bit of time to get to know some of the O.G’s of the jam-band scene this weekend at Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  John Bell, Dave Schools, Domingo Ortiz, John Hermann, Jimmy Herring and Duane Trucks make up Widespread Panic, an Athens, Georgia-based southern blues/progressive/rock/fuck/ little bit of everything band that originally formed in 1986, and has served as an important link between the early psychedelic/improvisational pioneers like The Grateful Dead, and their contemporary counterparts that are popping up our radars today.  The line-up has changed slightly over the years, but the mission remains the same and the band currently holds the record for the most sold out concerts (57) at one of the most universally beloved live concerts venues, Red Rocks Amphitheater. The group has produced 12 studio albums, eight live albums, plus even more compilation and archival albums.  If you haven’t seen Widespread Panic yet, they are definitely worth your time to check out.

Another great veteran jam-band, Railroad Earth, is in the area this week with a series of live performances that will help lift our spirits as we begin the transition into spring.  The band embellishes their intricate compositions with a strong lyrical presence that aims to inspire. Couple this with extensively cultivated improvisations and you have a recipe for delight. Interesting fact about the band: the name comes from one of iconic beatnik writer Jack Kerouac’s collection of stories called Lonesome Traveler. Give them a listen this Thursday at The National in Richmond, VA, and Friday & Saturday at 9:30 Club with special guest Lindsay Lou.
