A new event with a vision of beauty is happening next week October 12-14, at the lovely Camp Ramblewood in Darlington, MD.  Beauty in the Backyard is a Creative Arts Retreat filled with live music and interactive activities meant to inspire community spirit and individual empowerment.  Like an “adult summer camp,” there will be workshops, a scavenger hunt, a potluck dinner, collaborative painting, and much more. Put together by Metta Creative, a group that strives to foster creative exploration, Beauty in the Backyard is sure to uplift and energize you.

The lineup is filled with fresh music from up and coming musicians, mostly electronic but also jam and other genres.  To give you a little taste of what you can expect, we’ve highlighted five artists that you won’t want to miss.

5AM

The first 3 bands on this list are part of The Rust Music–a digital music label and artist management company aiming to provide a platform for talented underground musicians. The artist Sam Andrus, also known as 5AM creates “music for ears that are awake.” From Wilmington, DE, and based out of Philadelphia, PA, 5AM has been touring nationally this summer, and Beauty in the Backyard is his last festival appearance of the season.  His experimental electronic music pushes boundaries of sound to create a unique style of bass music that will bend your mind.

TYGRIS

Zach Plocic, also known as TYGRIS, is a New York based producer who weaves multi-dimensional soundscapes with his music, drawing from many influences including jazz, dubstep, and “neuro” sound design. He is professionally trained in musical arrangement and demonstrates this in his masterful compositions and improvisations.  His performances include live mixing and scratching, creating a unique experience for each new audience.

MALAKAI

Malakai is a downtempo bass producer and multi-instrumentalist based out of Brooklyn, NY.  Mentored by acclaimed artist Derek Van Scoten at the age of 17, he has since grown into his own, creating uniquely immersive live sets. More than just an artist on The Rust Music roster, he actually joined the team in 2017 to take an active role in the musical development of the underground New York music scene.

Bunk Buddha

We at The Jamwich have been friends with Baltimore based band Bunk Buddha since “back in the day” you might say, having booked them at our own festival, The Mad Tea Party Jam. Starting out with DJ/Producer Scott Donovan, then soon after adding drummer Corey King, the Bunk Buddha’s final form is an eclectic electronic three piece band now featuring the multi-effects violinist John Hao.  Their live sets layered with tracks both rowdy and mellow will move you and make you dance.

Joe Keyes and the Late Bloomer Band

This band is like a funk gospel orchestra led by a conductor with the vigor of a pastor leading his prized Sunday sermon.  We saw this Baltimore based band years ago, and we can tell you it’s impossible not to be moved to your feet. Joe Keyes, the vocalist, fronts this staggering 14 person band with two guitarists and a full horn section.

Though we only covered 5 “must-see” artists, rest assured that there are a ton of performances that you won’t want to miss at Beauty in the Backyard, including Box Era, Faceplant, Bassdread, Of Tomorrow, and many more.  Tickets will not be available at the gate so be sure to order them in advance ASAP.  You can buy them here on their website and be sure to RSVP to the Facebook event.
