So I thought I’d talk about some of the incredible live sets that you can find available online to listen to. There are many places to find them…some bands have their own dedicated sites such as livephish.com or liveumphs.com, and there are also a few commercial sites; in terms you pay for sets, such as nugs.net\livedownloads.com. There are quite a lot sets available for free, though, from archive.org.

For our first trip through the taper section, we’re going to go back to one my favorites from this past year, night two of Umphreys Mcgee’s two night run for this past Halloween. There are all kinds of little sends up and music hits all throughout this night highlighted by unbelievable Monster Mashes, where they take two or more songs and blend them into something new.

This is a genuine blast, like all Umphreys shows, to listen to you. They come in slow and melodic with the crowd just winding up as they pick up momentum into the first tracks. The energy in the first set is evenly distributed as it pushes and pulls you through the musical barrage Umphs lays down in this set. There are a few fun moments were they take time to address the crowd and the costumes they are wearing. During this set they hit you with an unbelievable version of Miami Virtue, a hectic take on Mulche’s Odyssey flowing into The Haunt. The first set wraps up with a crazy mash up of some of the best good time songs of the late 80’s and early 90s.

The second set opens up with another mind blowing mash-up. The band masterfully and artfully blends the songs ‘Kids” by MGMT with Nirvana Classic “Come As You Are” and a little “You Spin me Round” by Dead or Alive for good measure. This tune has made its way into the live rotation and the Jamwich crew was lucky enough to hear a version of this at the 02/12/2012 show in Baltimore MD at Ram’s Head Live. The set looses nothing and never misses a step as it continues on, giving you various highs and lows as it moves from song to song. They tease and blend Ozzy Osbourne and Yes into “All in Time” while flowing into some remarkable versions of “Day Nurse” and “Resolution”. This set closes with a quirky mash-up of Wings’ “Nineteen Hundred and Eight Five”, Terrence Trent D’Arby’s “Wishing Well” and their own “Well Wishers” that defiantly leaves the “Band on the Run”.

After a few moments of hooting hollering and chanting the band comes back to the stage for this somewhat epic encore. They lead in with “Hajimemashite” segueing into one of my absolute favorite live cuts from Umphreys so far the epic Mash-up of “In the Puppet Kitchen”. They take their own “In The Kitchen” and just melt it into “Puppet Strings” creating a new sonic experience unlike either song bust just as familiar as both.

Then once again the band leaves the stage and it all goes dark, but then the crowd cheers the lights come back on. Then Brendan, Joel, Jake, Ryan, Andy, and Kris come back out and grace us with one more short, 16 minute plus, song. This song one of the Jamwich’s editors favorite “Nothing Too Fancy” is highlighted with a sick jam of Blue Oyster Cult’s seminal “Don’t Fear the Reaper”.

Well there you have it my take, on a live set from archive.org, from one the best jam bands out there Umphreys McGee. So enjoy download and check it out, let us know if there is a particularly sick sets you think the Jamwich should check out and we will.
